The Wilderness Program is a bespoke experience for those struggling with addictions and acts an alternative to conventional rehab and therapy.
In-patient or out-patient therapy does not work for everyone and rather than go over the same territory time after time with very little changing we have created this program to lay a foundation for individuals of all ages to build on.
This twenty eight day program consists of taking an individual from detox (if necessary) to a remote area such as North Wales or the Peak District where they will live in a cottage style environment together with experienced mountaineers and a therapist. The mountaineers are in the main ex-special services and are skilled paramedics. However, this is not a boot camp and although there is a routine to the day individuals are treated with courtesy and kindness.
A typical day consists of early morning training followed by breakfast. All involved in the program are obliged to assist with cooking, cleaning and general household duties. Training might be a short run or some weight training and is tailored to suit the individual. Then it is out on the mountains for a hike. The benefit of this environment is that the individual has the opportunity to bond with the therapist over a long period of time rather than dipping in and out of one-to-one therapy in a clinical environment. This coordinated approach is designed to build the individuals self-esteem, self-confidence and enhance their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
This process is repeated day after day with the exception that once per week an activity is entered into such as white water rafting, a trip to the cinema or even a meal out.
At first the individual is apprehensive of their new environment but we have found that within a short space of time friendships grow and examples are set.
The individual is regularly and randomly drug tested. At the end of the twenty eight day period they will have no illicit chemicals in their system and hopefully will have broken the drug-taking cycle in order to enable them to focus on restructuring their lives in a positive and productive way.
Once the program has been completed the individual can be assessed and decisions made as to the future of therapy or treatment.
